An app for your shop or store: when is it worth it?

If you have a shop or a store, at some point you wondered whether an app is worth it. The honest answer is: sometimes yes, often not (yet). The key is understanding what problem you want to solve —showing products, taking orders, building loyalty— because there is a different tool for each one. Let us look at it clearly.

The online catalog: the first step

The first thing almost any shop needs is an online catalog: letting people see your products, prices, and availability from the phone before coming in or messaging you. This is usually a simple website, fast to load and easy to update. It replaces sending loose photos over WhatsApp and gives your business a much more professional image.

WhatsApp ordering or online store

For many small shops, receiving the order via WhatsApp with a catalog that builds the cart automatically is the perfect fit: low cost and people already use WhatsApp. If you sell volume or want to charge online, then a store with a cart and payments (MercadoPago) makes sense. The key is not to build a complex e-commerce if you still sell little, nor to fall short if you already have demand.

Loyalty: getting the customer back

Acquiring a new customer costs far more than getting back one who already bought from you. A loyalty system (points, perks, news alerts) brings your customers back. This can be done from a website, but this is where an app starts to make sense: being on the customer phone and being able to send notifications is exactly what a website cannot do.

When is an app worth it?

An app is worth it when your customers buy often and you want their recurring attention: notifications, strong loyalty, permanent presence on their phone. For a shop that sells occasionally, a website with a catalog and ordering is cheaper and performs just as well or better. The golden rule: start with the website, and add the app when you have a base of frequent customers who will use it. I detail what each option costs in how much a mobile app costs.

Your project

I have shop and store demos from different industries in my catalog. If you want an online catalog, ordering, or a store for your shop, tell me what you sell and at what pace, and I will recommend the option that fits you best.
