An app to sell at rural expos with no internet: how it works
At a rural expo stand the signal comes and goes, and a regular website freezes right when the customer is in front of you. How an app that quotes without internet works, with the EQUIBOX case.

An app for selling at rural expos has to work without internet: the sales rep builds the quote at the stand, the contact is saved on the device and syncs automatically when the signal comes back. It can be built as an installable web app, without going through the app stores.
Here is what it needs to solve, what the options are and how I solved it in the EQUIBOX configurator. EQUIBOX is a horse stable manufacturer in Argentina that makes a good share of its sales at rural expos, the big agricultural and livestock shows held in the countryside.
Why does a regular website fail at a stand?
Because it depends on the signal for every click. At a rural showground the connection comes and goes, and when there are lots of people it gets saturated. The result is familiar: the page keeps loading with the customer in front of you, the form gets lost on submit, and the sales rep ends up writing on paper and typing everything in at night, if they remember.
At an expo, customers also arrive in waves over a few hours. Every lost contact is a sale nobody follows up. So for anyone who sells at fairs, a tool that works without signal is not a technical luxury: it is the difference between being able to use it or not.
What is an installable web app?
It is a web page that can be installed on a phone, tablet or computer and sits on the home screen like an app. What matters here is that it can store the entire application on the device, so it opens and works even with no connection.
It does not need to be published on Google Play or the App Store, and it updates itself when there is signal. If you want the general comparison, I covered it in mobile app or website?; the technical side of how data syncs is in offline-first architecture.
How did I solve it for EQUIBOX?
EQUIBOX manufactures modular horse stalls and stables in Berazategui, near Buenos Aires, and many of its sales happen at rural expos. Before, every quote was put together by hand right there, with no internet.
I built them a 3D configurator that works as an installable app. With no signal, the sales rep designs the stable with the customer, they see it in 3D, and the quote is saved first on the device. When the connection comes back, it syncs with the system automatically.
The tricky part is retries: if the upload is cut halfway and repeated, the same customer cannot show up twice in the CRM. To prevent that, every quote is marked on the device itself and the system never accepts the same one twice. And the whole app opens with no network at all.
See the EQUIBOX case studyWhat else matters when it is used at a stand?
Besides working without signal, at EQUIBOX some decisions were made for the place where it is used:
- The 3D has to run smoothly on an iPad. It is tuned so the stable moves without stuttering on a tablet, even in night mode.
- It has to be visible in the sun. Night mode is exaggerated on purpose: at a stand in full sunlight, a subtle effect cannot be seen.
- It has to load fast on a weak signal. The screen is kept light so there is little to download.
- The camera has to frame itself. It reframes based on the size of the stable, so the sales rep does not have to zoom with the customer waiting.
- It must not limit what can be sold. There is a visual limit of stalls per group so the 3D does not slow down, but it does not limit what can be quoted.
Regular website, installable web app or app store app?
| Regular website | Installable web app | Native app store app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| No signal | Does not work. | Works, if designed that way. | Works, if designed that way. |
| Installation | Not needed. | From the browser. | From Google Play or the App Store. |
| Updates | Instant. | Automatic, when there is signal. | Go through store review. |
| Also works as a public website | Yes. | Yes: it is the same one. | No, it is a separate thing. |
| Extra costs | None. | None. | Developer accounts on the stores. |
I break down the store accounts in how much it costs to publish an app.
What should you test before the expo?
- Install it on the stand devices with signal, the day before, so everything is downloaded.
- Quote in airplane mode. Build a full quote offline and check that it is saved.
- Reconnect and check that it reaches the system exactly once.
- Look at it in the sun. What looks fine in the office may be unreadable outdoors.
- Charge the battery and bring a spare. No app works with the tablet switched off.
How much does it cost?
A sales app that works offline is a custom web system, so what defines the cost is what it has to quote, how many products and options it handles, and where each lead has to go (WhatsApp, CRM, email). The offline part adds work, and it is much cheaper if it is planned from the start than if it is added to a finished app. If you also want to quote with prices, shipping and payment plans from the same stand, I covered it in sales system and CRM for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
Can a website work without internet?
Yes, if it is designed for it. An installable web app stays saved on the device and keeps working with no signal. Whatever the sales rep enters is saved and sent once the connection comes back.
Does it have to be published on Google Play or the App Store?
Not necessarily. An installable web app is added from the browser and sits on the home screen like any other app, without going through the stores. The EQUIBOX configurator works that way.
What if the same customer gets saved twice when a sync is retried?
That has to be prevented by design. At EQUIBOX every quote is marked on the device itself, and the system never accepts the same one twice: retries never duplicate a contact in the CRM.
Does it work on a tablet?
Yes. The EQUIBOX configurator is optimized so the 3D runs smoothly on an iPad, which is what is usually used at a stand.
How much does an app like this cost?
It is a custom web system, so the cost depends on what it has to quote, how many products and options it handles, and where the leads have to go. Making it work offline adds work, and it is best planned from the start. Tell me how you sell and I'll send you a fixed quote within 48 hours.
If you sell at expos, fairs or on-site visits and your current tool freezes with no signal, tell me what you sell and how you quote today.
