Custom website vs template: What's best for your business?

WordPress template for $200,000 or custom development for $1,000,000 ARS. Is the difference just price? I explain what you gain and lose with each option.

It's the first decision you have to make when you want a website: use a pre-designed template or invest in custom development? The answer depends on your business, budget, and goals. There's no "better" option in the abstract — there's a better option for you. I explain the real differences so you can decide with information.

What is a template and what is custom development

A template is a pre-made design (usually WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace) customized by changing colors, text, and images. It's like buying a pre-built apartment: you move in fast, but someone else decided the layout. Custom development is a site built from scratch with proprietary code, designed specifically for your business. It's like building your house: it takes longer, but every corner is designed for you.

When a template works

If your budget is limited and you need to be online fast, a template can work. It's also a good option if your business is standard (a restaurant, a hair salon, an independent professional) and you don't need special features. In these cases, a well-configured template with good content can fulfill the goal of basic digital presence.

The real problems with templates

What they don't tell you is that templates load plugins you don't need, which makes your site slower. Google penalizes slow sites by lowering them in search results. Also, your site will look like thousands of others using the same template. Observant customers notice, and that doesn't convey professionalism. And if you ever need a feature the template doesn't support, you're stuck: either change everything or settle for the limitations.

When custom development is better

If your business has its own identity and you want to stand out, a custom site lets you convey exactly what you want. If you need specific features (appointment booking, catalog with filters, management system integrations), custom development is the only real option. And if you want your site to load fast and rank well on Google, clean code without unnecessary plugins makes an enormous difference.

Direct comparison

In loading speed, a custom site always wins: loads in 1-2 seconds vs 3-5 for a template with plugins. In design, the template gives you 80% of what you want; custom development gives you 100%. In initial cost, the template wins. In long-term cost, custom development is usually cheaper because you don't pay for plugin licenses, premium themes, or maintenance for updates that break things. In SEO, the clean optimized code of custom development ranks better.
