Software developer for UK small businesses: remote, custom-built and on your working hours

If you run a small business in the UK and need a website, a booking system, an admin dashboard or a quote tool built around the way you actually work, I can build it remotely from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Argentina is three to four hours behind the UK depending on the time of year, so your afternoon is my morning and we share a good part of every working day.

This is for the owner who's tired of juggling spreadsheets, Word templates and a phone full of messages, and wants to know what it's like to work with a developer who isn't down the road. I'll cover the kind of business this fits, how the hours line up, and what you should still check with someone local.

The kind of UK business that outgrows off-the-shelf tools

It's not about size. It's about the moment your business has its own way of doing things and the generic software keeps pushing you to do them its way instead.

A building or home improvement firm that writes every quote by copying the last one. An independent shop with stock in a spreadsheet only the owner understands. A clinic, salon or studio taking bookings by phone and WhatsApp and losing an hour a day confirming them. A wholesaler whose trade customers email orders in a dozen different formats. Or a garden building manufacturer (sheds, summerhouses, log cabins) that could let buyers design their own online. That last one has its own article: a garden building configurator for UK manufacturers.

What you do now, and what changes with something built for you

TodayWith a tool built around your business
Quotes typed up in a Word templateQuotes built from your own prices and rules, sent as a branded PDF
Bookings by phone and textCustomers book themselves and get a reminder; you see the diary on your phone
Stock in a spreadsheetA dashboard where you add stock, record sales and see what's running low
Trade orders arriving by emailA portal where each trade customer sees their own list and orders without typos
A website you can't touchA website you update yourself: prices, photos, opening hours, news

How the hours actually line up

Argentina stays on the same time all year (UTC−3), while the UK moves its clocks, so the gap is three hours in winter and four in summer. When it's noon in London, Manchester or Glasgow, it's 8 or 9 a.m. here. Calls go over your lunch break or in the afternoon, and nobody has to be up at midnight.

There's a side benefit people don't expect. Whatever you send me before you finish for the day reaches me with several working hours still ahead. Quite often the change you asked for is ready to look at when you open your laptop the next morning.

What working with me remotely looks like

We start with a video call where you walk me through how things work today. The more real it is, the better: the quote you send, the spreadsheet you live in, the messages that pile up. From that I put together a proposal in phases and a quote for your project.

Then you follow progress through a link you can open on your phone or laptop, and you sign off each phase before we move on. We keep in touch on WhatsApp or email, in English or Spanish. At the end you get the website or system up and running, plus your own login to manage it. I wrote more about this way of working in working with a remote developer.

Data protection, VAT and the bits that are yours to check

If your new tool stores customer details, the UK has rules about consent, how long you keep data and who can see it. I'll build whatever you need for that: consent boxes on forms, a privacy page with the wording you give me, and staff permissions so each person only sees their part.

What I won't do is tell you what the law says. Legal wording, VAT and invoicing rules are for your accountant or a local professional to confirm, and I'll make sure the system follows what they tell you.

Real case

A real project in a different trade: Boca de Lobo

Boca de Lobo is a steakhouse with two locations in Buenos Aires. I built their website with a QR digital menu of more than 250 items, promotions and location pages, plus their own admin dashboard where the owner changes prices, dishes and offers without waiting on me.

Different trade, different country, but it's the same problem a lot of UK small businesses have: information that changes often and has to be right everywhere, without depending on an outside person to update it.

Freelancer, agency or something off the shelf?

I work on my own, so you talk to me from the first call to the handover. For some projects that's exactly right and for others it isn't; I compared both in freelance developer or agency. And before you commission anything bespoke, it's worth asking whether a ready-made product would do. I went through that in custom software vs off-the-shelf.

If you manufacture buildings or structures and want to see how I work with companies on your side of the Atlantic, the Estructuras 3D blog has a piece on hiring a remote 3D configurator developer from Europe.

Frequently asked questions

Is the time difference with the UK a problem?

Not really. Argentina is three to four hours behind the UK depending on the time of year, so we overlap from your late morning to the end of your day. Calls go in that window, and what you send before you log off is often done by the next morning.

Do you work in English?

Yes, in English or Spanish, whichever suits you. Your website copy can use British spelling if that's what your customers expect. If you need another language, you bring the text and I put it in.

Can you work with the website I already have?

It depends on how it's built. Sometimes it makes sense to add a new piece, like a booking system or a quote tool, and sometimes rebuilding is the better call. We look at it together on the first call.

Who owns the website or system when it's done?

You do. You get your own access to everything, and the domain and accounts are in your name. If one day you want someone else to take over, they can.
