Pool configurator for pool builders: let families see their pool before the site visit

A pool configurator lets a family pick the shape, size, finish, steps and extras and see the pool in 3D right away. The builder gets an inquiry with those choices made and walks into the site visit with half the conversation already done.

Pool configurator for pool builders: let families see their pool before the site visit

A pool configurator is a tool on your website where a family picks the shape, size, finish, steps and extras, and watches the pool take shape in 3D while they decide. When they're done, you get an inquiry with all of that spelled out, instead of “how much for a pool?” with nothing else to go on.

Here's how it fits the way pool builders actually sell, which options are worth opening up, and which ones belong to the site visit.

Who asks about a pool, and what they're missing

Pool inquiries have one thing in common: they almost always come from a family that has never bought a pool. They've saved a photo from Instagram, they have a rough idea of the size, and no idea what separates one interior finish from another, or why a wide entry step takes more room than a ladder.

So the first conversation tends to be long and mostly teaching. You walk them through shapes, depths and finishes, send photos of past jobs, and only then does the real question come up: will it fit the yard, and does it fit the budget? A lot of that happens over text, at night, with a few families at once.

A configurator takes over the teaching part. The family tries things, compares, and figures out on their own that the pool in the photo was bigger than their backyard.

What the family gets to choose

The things that drive the price and the things that decide whether they love it. For a typical concrete or fiberglass pool builder:

  • Shape: rectangle, rounded corners, L-shape, freeform or whatever molds you carry, each at its real size.
  • Size and depth: length, width, and whether it's one depth or has a shallow end for the kids, within what you build.
  • Steps and tanning ledge: full-width entry steps, corner steps, or a shallow ledge where loungers sit in the water.
  • Finish and coping: interior color, coping material and the deck around the pool.
  • Extras: lights, a water feature, a spa, heating or a cover, only if you sell them.
  • Setting: a generic backyard with grass and a patio so the scale makes sense, without pretending it's their actual house.

“Every pool is a different job”

That's true, and the configurator doesn't argue with it. An in-ground pool depends on the soil, access for the excavator, where the plumbing runs and things you only see standing in the yard. Nobody's signing a pool contract based on something they put together on their phone.

But all of that comes after a decision the family has to make anyway: what shape, roughly what size, what style. Right now that decision happens during your visit, with you explaining as you go, or it doesn't happen and the lead goes cold. With a configurator, you show up to a family that's already excited about a specific pool, and the visit becomes about how to build it in that yard.

It also saves you trips. If a family designs a pool, looks at it and decides it's not for them this year, that's a visit you didn't have to make.

Why the season matters so much

Pools sell against the calendar. The first hot weekend of spring, everybody reaches out at once and wants the pool done by summer. Every inquiry you have to start from scratch is one you answer late.

With a configurator, a good share of those inquiries arrive sorted: shape, size, finishes and location. You can put the ready-to-visit ones first and send the link to the ones still at the “just looking” stage. The design can be shared by link, so the family argues about it at the dinner table and comes back with a decision.

Off-season it works the other way around: the people who plan ahead design their pool in winter and reach out once they've made up their minds.

Real case

Already working in a different industry: Equibox

I don't have a pool configurator live yet, and I'd rather say so. What I do have running is the same idea for another product that's chosen by size and finishes: I built the 3D quote tool for EQUIBOX, a horse stall and barn manufacturer near Buenos Aires. Customers design their barn (size, model, walls and accessories), download a PDF spec sheet and request a quote on WhatsApp.

You can also try Estructuras 3D, my demo for metal buildings, carports and modular homes, to see how a configurator feels on a phone. Its blog has a post on the swimming pool 3D configurator with more detail on the pool side.

What lands in your inbox

A WhatsApp message or an email with the shape, size, depth, steps, finish and extras, plus an image of the pool exactly as they designed it. If you want, a PDF spec sheet too: the family keeps it, and you use it as the starting point for your quote. I explain how that works in automatic PDF quotes.

If you also sell pergolas or decks around the pool, they can live in the same tool; I wrote about that in the pergola and deck configurator post.

How we'd build it

I work on my own and remotely from Buenos Aires (Argentina time, UTC−3), with video calls and progress you can check by link as it comes together. We start with your shapes, your size ranges and the combinations you don't build. You don't need 3D drawings: photos of past jobs, measurements and what you normally explain to a family on the first call are enough. I quote every project based on what your company needs.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work if every pool is custom-built on site?

Yes. It doesn't replace the site visit, it gets the first round of decisions out of the way. The family shows up with a shape, rough size and finishes picked, and you spend the visit on what really needs eyes on the yard, like access for the excavator or the slope.

What if I sell fiberglass pools with fixed molds?

That's even simpler. The configurator only shows your molds at their real sizes and lets buyers pick color, steps, coping and extras. Nobody asks for a shell you don't make.

Do I have to show prices?

No. You can show a ballpark figure or just receive the configuration and quote it yourself. A lot of pool builders prefer the second option, since the final number depends on the job site.

What do I need to get started?

Your models or shapes, the size ranges you build, the finishes you offer and photos of pools you've done. With that I build a first version you can try on your phone.
